IMPRESSIVE FOR VIGORELLO 2001
our wine among the best Supertuscan for the Italian Sommeliers
The latest issue, April 2007, of the wine magazine BIBENDA, the official journal of the A.I.S. (Association of Italian Sommeliers) carried a fine survey on the “Supertuscans.” It reported the results of an extensive tasting of almost all of the recognised wines in this class, some 42 in all, with scores ranging from 94 points (Paleo Rosso 2003, Tenuta di Trinoro 2004) to 85 points (Sodole 2001, Campaccio 2003).
Outstanding results, in the words of the article, that simply go to prove what an outstanding role these wines play in the world of Italian winemaking, even if today there are just as many criticisms as accolades.
Our own VIGORELLO 2001, with 91 points, was in 7th place, but overall one of the best wines for quality/price ratio.
Here is Bibenda’s review:
Vigorello, one of the iconic wines of the Supertuscan family, derives its name from the Latin word vigor, or virility and character. The first vintage goes as far back as 1968, but only in 1978 did it assume its present physiognomy, with the addition of some Cabernet Sauvignon. A genuine Tuscan native, but with an international flair. If it were an automobile, it would be a Maserati.
91> VIGORELLO 2001
Sangiovese 45%, Cabernet Sauvignon 40%, Merlot 15% - Alc.13.5% - Euro 30
Rim still purplish. Nose richly-layered, but measured: dried plum, cassis, cocoa powder, iron, leather, and liquorice. Palate rounded, balanced, with well-integrated tannins. Beautiful; true Tuscan character, with great cellar potential. 18-20 months in barriques. Wild game birds.
